ATASCOCITA-KINGWOOD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

AKGS Leaders

Founder - Carl T. Martin

The club was founded in December, 2006, by Carl T. Martin.  Formerly named The Greater Harris County Family Tree Club, the society changed its name on January 14, 2009.  Carl, a native Texan, married his high school sweetheart and they have two children and five grandchildren.  Carl began researching his family history in 1978.

Graduating with a Masters in Criminal Justice, Carl was employed by the US Postal Service and Farmer's Insurance.  He's very active in the comminity:  church, 32 degree Mason of an Humble Shrine Club and Toast Masters.  Retiring after 23 years as a Postal Inspector, Carl enjoys membership in the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors.  Carl also sells insurance.

President - Patricia Ann Parkinson

As a 4th generation Floridian, her devotion to genealogy runs deep. From her education degree, she taught at several levels and is currently retired. This gives her more time to trace her family's roots which she has been researching for over 20 years.

A member of United Daughters of the Confederacy and National Society Southern Dames of America, Ann is now engaged in teaching others the craft and exploring ways to find those hidden nuggets of her family's history. Her husband of 30 years assists in her pursuits. She looks forward to passing on her love of genealogy to her two children and her five grandchildren.

1st Vice President - Jeanne Gibson

Retiring, after 30 years as a manager and analyst in the Telecommunications industry, Jeanne now has time to pursue her love of geneaology and history.  Descended from German immigrants who came to Galveston in the Noble Colony, she is concentrating her search in that area.

Jeanne is also very active in the Kingwood Women's Club and many other community service projects, but always finds time for the major loves of her life:  her daughter and two granddaughters, and traveling with her husband.

2nd Vice President - Sharyn Westbrook

Sharyn was born in San Leandro, California but moved to Texas before age two and feels like a "native Texan."  She is a retired registered nurse and did a variety of nursing including 22 years as a recovery room nurse or post anesthesia nurse.  She enjoys a good mystery novel and genealogy was a logical pursuit.

As a foster child, genealogy became a means to learn more about her biological family.  By pursuing genealogy research she has been able to unite with her mother and siblings and many distant cousins.

Sharyn has traced her paternal grandmothers' family to Virginia in the 1600's.  This was aided by distant cousins that have published their own family research.  She continues to enjoy the pursuit of any informaion that helps complete the family history.

She is happily married to the same fellow for 43 years and has two grown sons and three grandchildren.

Secretary - Judy Mills

Judy is a native Floridian but has resided in Texas since 1968.  She started dabbling in genealogy research, while in high school, after listening to her mom ask her paternal grandmother questions about her family.  Judy has one daughter who helps research sometimes, as well.

Judy earned her Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and has been teaching since 1977.

Treasurer - Larry Gross

Larry was born in Mobile, Alabama. He has a BS degree in Mathematics and has spent most of his career in Information Technology. He is semi-retired and currently works as a property management consultant along with his son.

He was raised by a divorced mother from the age of two along with his older brother. He never knew his father and thus began his interest in his family history. He has been researching his family history for about three years. Still a novice in research technique, he has been able to trace his father's family to Elk County, Pennsylvania in 1840. He finds historical facts to be most helpful and interesting when researching and in "putting skin on the bones".

Larry is married to the same lovely lady for 46 years and enjoys two married sons and four grandchildren.
